Character Creation Challenge 2023: #21 = “Mutants and Masterminds - Third Edition”

Our next for this business is the 3rd edition of  “Mutants and Masterminds”. And since I don’t want to spend all day on this superhero business -- I’m going to use the Random business in the Game Master’s Kit file.

Step #1 is rolling the archetype of my PC. To do that I need to roll a d20. Classic tabletop roleplaying dice. 17 is the number that the d20 gives me. That 17 gives me the following: Totem. The following is what the file has to remark on Totem:  “The Totem is a superhero whose powers are closely tied to a particular animal. The Totem may have acquired its powers through an accident of science, an invocation of the animal spirits, or may even be an exceptional, self-aware animal. Totem heroes tend to be as varied as the animals they represent, and they can resemble other archetypes such as the Martial Artist, Warrior, and Powerhouse.”

Step #2 is to roll up Abilities for my PC by doing another roll of the d20. The number I get from the d20 is the following: 11. 11 means my character is Invocation. That means the following: “You were granted your powers by calling upon the animal spirits.” I get the following abilities according to the file:

Now it’s time for some Advantages -- and I get that in Step #3 -- by rolling a d20. This time the number I get from the d20 is the following: 15. That means I like to catch and hold my foes like a certain marvelous web-shooting hero. I get the following according to the file:

Step #4 is to roll up Behavior Adventures -- and it’s still a d20. I get the following number from the d20: 13. That means my hero is one sneaky son of a supervillain.  I get the following according to the file:

Step #6 is to roll on the Animal Skill business -- and it’s still a d20. 16 is the number I got from the dice -- and that is wise and I get the following:

Step #7 is to roll on the Human Skill business and it’s a d20 as well. I get the following number from the d20: 4. That means my character is athletic -- and get the following:

Step 6 is to roll up the Totem Type. I’m hoping for either a snake or a spider -- but I still required the d20. 18 is the number I got -- and I’m in the reptile business. I start with getting the following powers:

Now, I have to roll a d20 for the next business -- and the number I get is the following: 17. Holy smokes, I got what I was hoping for -- a snake. I get the following powers:

Step #7 is to get my Defense which is the following according to the file:

Step #8 is the time to name my PC. I’m going with Medusa here.

Step #9 is Identity. I’m going with Michelle Duzzazzi.

Step #10 is the make the decision on whether identity is secret or public. I’m going with Sercet.

Step #11 is the Gender -- and that is female.

Step #12 is the Age. I’m going with 30. If it worked for the Silver Age version of Superman -- it works for me.

Step #13 is Height. I’m going with 6 ft. even.

Step #14 is Weight: I’m going with 180 lbs.

Step #15 is Hair. I’m going with neon red.

Step #16 is Eyes. I’m going with neon yellow.

Step #17 is Grop Affiation. I’m going with NA until she joins up with a group of other heroes.

Step #18 is the Base of Operation. They are two main cities in the 3rd edition -- Emerald City and Freedom City. Question #1: Emerald City for Medusa? My View: 50/50. Mythic View: 25. Yes.

Step #19 is to move the Power Points of the Totem on page 40 to the character sheet.  The following is what I have to move:

Step #20 is Complications. I’m going with the following:

  •  Enemy: Mongoose  (A mongoose is a snake’s enemy)

  •  Temper  (My PC has a temper)

  •  Quirk (Always worship the Greek gods and goddesses)

Step #21 is the background -- which I go with the following: “The story of Medusa began to like the myths that people like to tell -- a priest of Athena, who did the wild thing with Posideon when he asks Medusa to do so, and after a heated argument over Athena on what Posideon did to her --  Athena had Nemesis, the Goddess of Revenge,  turn her into a monster. Still a monster, she did worship the gods and goddesses - though it was for the animals of Greece. Not happy with this event, Eris, the Goddess of Trouble, in the disguise of Athena -- helped Perseus kill Medusa.

Harmony feels sorry for Medusa -- uses her magic to make a clone of Medusa’s head -- and went to see Persphone. Persephone turned Medusa into a human -- and told her that on her 13th lives before she will get superpowers related to the snakes that she had in monster form.

Medusa usually gets a clue or three in her life number around the age of 7. In the late 1990s, long after Omega’s Terminal Invasion -- and the death of the Centurion -- she got a truck of clues that she was on her 13 life -- with the biggest being a “Scooby-Doo”  Direct-To-Video movie in which someone faked Medusa. She called on Persphone -- and Persphone give her snake-them superpower as well as a suit that was a mixture of the following: a tunic, a spy’s catsuit, and superhero spandex. So Michelle decides to work for a book publisher while Medusa fights crime in Freedom City.”

And I think I am finished with this character -- below this paragraph is Medusa’s full stats.

Character Creation Challenge 2022: #22 = “Mutants and Mastermind -- Third Edition"

For our next business, I’m going with “Mutants and Mastermind”. The edition here is the third edition of the game.

Step #1 is getting the power level and the Power Points for the campaign from the fictional Game Master.

Question #1: Is the Power Level for the fictional Game Master’s campaign the following: Power Level 10? My View: 50/50. Mythic View: 75. No.

Question #2: Power Level 12? My View: 50/50. Mythic View: 79. No.

Question #3: Power Level 14? My View: 50/50. Mythic View: 40. Yes. That gives me 210 Power Points for my PC.

Step #2 is getting the Abilities. The eight Abilities in “Mutants and Mastermind” are the following: Strength, Stamina, Dexterity, Agility, Fighting, Intellect, Awareness & Presence. The cost of agility is 2 Powers Point per rank. The following is what I do for my PC here with the math business in brackets.

  • Strength of 8 (8*2=16. 210 - 16 = 194)

  • Stamina of 6 (6*2=12. 194 - 12 = 182)

  • Agility of 6 (6*2=12. 182-12=170)

  • Dexterity of 6 (6*2=12. 170-12=158)

  • Fighting of 7 (7*2=14. 158-14=144)

  • Intellect of 5 (5*2=10. 144-10=134)

  • Awareness of 5 (5*2=10. 134-10=124)

  • Presence of 5 (5*2=10. 124 -10=114)

Step #2 is dealing with the Defense of the PC. The five Defense businesses are all equal to one of the eight Abilities above.. With the expectation of Toughness, all Defense abilities can be updated with payment of 1 Power Point per rank. Step #2A is getting Dodge which is equal to Agility -- which is 6 for this PC. Step #2B is getting Fortitude is based on Stamina -- which is also 6 for this PC. I feel like getting it up to 8. 8-6=2. 2 times 1 is 2. 114-2=112. Step #2C is getting Parry - -which is based on Fighting. Fighting is 7 -- which looks good for Parry's business in my not so humble opinion. Step #2D is getting Toughness -- which is also based on Stamina as well. Stamina is 6 -- but I want to get 10. 10-6=4. 112-4=108 Step #2E is getting Will. Will is based on Awareness -- the PC’s Awareness is 5. I want to get a 6. 6-5=1. 108-1=107.

Step #3 is getting Skill. Skill costs two points per 2 ranks. The following is what skills I brought for the PC with the math business in brackets as usual:

  • Athletics 4 (4*2=8. 107-8=99)

  • Deception 6 (6*2=12. 99-12=87)

  • Insight 6 (6*2=12. 87-12=75)

  • Intimidation 7 (7*2=14. 75-14=61)

Step #4 is Advantages. Advantages are 1 power point per Advantage rank. The following is what I bought for my PC with the math business in brackets as usual.

  • Assessment 5 (5*1=5. 61-5=56)

  • Attractive 2 (2*1=2. 56-2=54)

  • Eidetic Memory 5 (5*1=5. 54-5=49)

  • Languages 10 (10*2=20. 49-20=29)

Step #5 is getting Powers. Powers following the following math business:

Power Cost = (Base Effect Costs + Extras - Flaws x Rank) + Flat Modifiers.....

..The following are the powers I bought for my PC with the bath business in brackets.

  • Flight 4 (4*2=8. 29-1-28)

  • Protect 10 (10*1=10. 28-10=18)

Step #6 is Name. I’m going with the name of Kyana for my PC.

Step #7 is Origin. I’m going with Alien -- but Kyana is not a space alien - -she’s a Dimensional Alien.

Step #8 is Age. I’m going with 35 -- which was the common age of the Silver Age Superman.

Step #9 is Appearance. I’m going with the following: “Kyana is a tall woman with red hair and red eyes usually dressed in a white toga and sandals.”

Step #10 is Personality. I’m going with the following: “Kyana is pretty friendly to most humans with the expectation of crooks. If she finds a crook, she will not rest until that crook is jailed.”

Step #11 is Complications. I’m going with the following for her: Fame (She comes from a famous 1980’s action cartoon) & Phobia (She is totally afraid of bats)...

...And Kyana is done, below this paragraph is Kyana’s full stats.

Character Creation Business #19: Mutants and Mastermind Third Edition

“Mutants and Masterminds” -- sometimes shortened to “M&M” -- is a very famous superhero tabletop game made by Green Ronin. I am using the third edition here.

Step #1 is for me to figure out the Power Level of the campaign and the Power Points that I need for my heroes. Question #1: Is the usual business for “M&M”: PL 10 and 150 PPs? My View: 50/50. Mythic View: 98. Exceptional No. I’m going with PL 20 and 300 PPs.

Step #2 is for Abilities Rank. The eight abilities of “M&M” are the following: Strength, Stamina, Dexterity, Agility, Fighting, Intellect, Awareness, & Presence.  The following is what I did for my PC:

  • Strength: 12. 12 - 12 = 0 12 * 2 = 24. 300 - 24 = 276.

  • Stamina: 14. 14 - 0 = 14. 14 * 2 = 28. 276 - 28 = 248

  • Dexterity: 10. 10 - 10 = 0 10 * 2 = 20. 248 - 20 = 228

  • Agility: 13. 13 - 0 =13. 13 * 2 = 26. 228 - 26 = 202

  • Fighting: 11. 11 - 0 = 11. 11 * 2 = 22. 202 - 22 = 180

  • Intellect: 12. 12 - 0 = 12. 12 * 2 - 24. 180 - 24 = 156

  • Awareness: 10. 10 - 10 = 0. 10 * 2 = 20. 156 - 20 = 136

  • Presence: 12. 12 - 12 = 0. 12 * 2 = 24. 136 - 12 = 124.

Step #3 to deal with the Defensive and Initiative and there are based on one of the above ability. Dodge is equal to Agility. So that’s a 13. Fortitude is Stamina -- so that is a 14. Parry is based on Fighting -- so that’s an 11. Toughness is based on Stamina -- so that 14 as well. And Will is based on Awareness -- and that is 10

Step #4 is to get skills for my hero. Skills cost 1 PP per two levels of skills. The following is what I got for my heroes with the math business in brackets as usual:

  • Acrobatics 2 (124 - 1 = 123)

  • Athletics 4 (123 - 2 = 121)

  • Close Combat 4 (121  - 2 = 119 )

  • Investigation 6 (119 - 3 = 116)

  • Perception 6 (116 - 3 = 113)

  • Technology 4 (113 - 2 = 111)

Step #5 is Advantages. Advantages only cost 1PP for them. The following is what I got for my PC:

  • Beginner’s Luck (111 - 1 = 110)

  • Eidetic Memory (110 - 1 = 109)

  • Evasion (109 - 1 = 108)

  • Leadership (108 - 1 = 107)

  • Teamwork (107 - 1 - 106)

Step #4 is to get the Powers for my PC. The Power Cost are the powers are the following math problem. Power Cost = (Base Effect Cost x Extra - Flaws) * Rank + Flat Modifiers. The following is what I got for my PC with followed by the math business:

  • Fight 4  (4 + 2 = 2. 106 - 2 = 104)

  • Immorality 10 (104 - 20 = 84)

Step #5 is the hero’s name, I’m going with Angelica

Step #6 is the hero’s player. That’s me, Dr. Fowl Thinker.😉

Step #7 is Identity. I’m going with Public and know as Min-Li Yu.
