Character Creation Business #24: Hero System Sixth Edition

“Hero System” is one of the many generic universal -- but Hero System is the system behind “Champions”, the first superhero tabletop game. I will be using the Sixth Edition for this one.

Step #1 is to get a genre. Time to bring “Mythic” out. Question #1: Is the genre the following: Cyberpunk? My View: 50/50. Mythic View: 94. Exceptional No. That means the genre of the campaign is neither “Cyberpunk” nor “Espionage”. Question #2: “Fantasy”? My View: 50/50. Mythic View: 61. No. Question #3: “Horror”? My View: 50/50. Mythic View: 97. Exceptional No. It’s neither “Horror” nor “Military”. Question #4: “Mystery”? My View: 50/50. Mythic View: 90. No. Question #5: “Pulp”? My View: 50/50. Mythic View: 20. Yes. The “pulp business” is the business for this character.

Step #2 is to get PC’s Character Points to build them. Question #6: In the Normal section? My View: 50/50. Mythic View: 63. No. Question #7: In the Heroic section? My View: 50/50. Mythic View: 13. Yes. Question #8: Standard Heroic business? My View: 50/50. Mythic View: 85. No. Question #9: Powerful Heroic business? My View: 50/50. Mythic View: 74. No. Question #10: Z Very Power Heroic business? My View: 50/50. Mythic View: 89. That’s all that is in Heroic Business. Question #11: Should I move on to the Superheroic section? My View: 50/50. Mythic View: 38. Yes. Question #12: Low-Powered? My View: 50/50. Mythic View: 94. Exceptional No.  Our PC is Cosmic Power, which gives me 750 and up points for character and I’m not worrying about limits on complications for my character. Question #13: 750 points only? My View: 50/50. Mythic View: 13. Yes. Ok, 750 points for my PC. I also decide on my character’s name: “Eris” get Step #3 out of my hair.

Step #4 is to buy Characteristics. The following is the character business -- and the math business in brackets as usual:

  • Strength starts at 10. 1 Character Points for 1 point in Strength. I’m going with 20 here. [750 - 10 = 740]

  • Dexterity starts at 10. 2 Character Points for 1 point in Dexterity. I’m going with the base 10 here. [740 - 0 = 740]

  • Constitution starts at 10. See Strength as this business is similar to the Strength business earlier. I’m going with 20 here. [740 - 10 = 730]

  • Intelligence starts at 10. See Strength as this business is similar to Strength business earlier. I’m going with 15. [730 - 5 = 725]

  • Ego starts at 10. See Strength as this business is similar to the Strength business earlier. I’m going with 15. [725 - 5 = 700]

  • Presence starts at a 10. I’m going with 20 here. [700 - 10 = 690]

  • Offensive Combat Value starts at 3. It’s 5 Character points per +1 this business. I like a 10. [10 - 3 = 7. 7 * 5 = 35. 690 - 35 = 655.]

  • Defensive Combat Value starts at 3. This is similar to the Offensive Combat Value above. I’m going with 10 again. [10 - 3 = 7. 7 * 5 = 35. 655 - 35 = 620.

  • Offensive Mental Combat Value starts at 3. It’s 3 Character points per +1 in this business. I’m going to 6. [6 - 3 = 3. 3 * 3 = 9. 620 - 9 = 611.]

  • Defensive Metal Value starts at 3. This is similar to the Offensive Mental Combat Value business above. I’m going with a 6 here. [6 - 3 = 3. 3 * 3 = 9. 611 - 9 = 602]

  • Speed starts at 2. It’s 10 character points per +1 in this business. I’m going to stick with that 2.

  • Physical Defense starts at 2. Buying points here are similar to the Strength business above. I’m going with 20 here. [20 - 2 = 18. 602 - 18 = 584.]

  • Energy Defense starts at 2. This business here is similar to the Strength business. I’m going with 20 here as well. [584 - 18 = 566]

  • Recovery starts at 4. Buying points for this one are similar to the Strength business. I am going with 10 here. [10 - 4 = 6. 566 - 6 = 560]

  • Endurance starts at 20. Buying a point in this one costs +1 points for 5 points in this. I think I leave this one alone.

  • Body starts at 10. Buying a point for this one is similar to the Strength business above. I think I’m going with 20. [560 - 10 = 550]

  • Stun starts at a 20. This is business is 1 Character Points for +2 points in this. I think I leave this one alone.

Step #5 is buying Skills. The following is what I brought for Eris -- and the math business is in the brackets as usual.

  • Acrobatics  [550 - 3 = 547]

  • Acting [547 - 3 = 544]

  • Climbing [544 - 3 = 541]

  • Disguise [541 - 3 = 538]

  • Paramedics [538 - 3 = 535]

Step #6 is buying Perks. I’m buying two Connects for Eris: King Hades & Queen Persphone.  For it’s King Hades. Basic +11 for him. 535 - 2 = 532. Same story for Queen Persphone. 532 - 2 = 530.

Step #7 is buying Talents. I’m going with Universal Translator. That knocks 20 out of the 530 I have left of Character Points leaving me with 510 Character Points.

Step #8 is to buy Powers. None of the powers please me -- and this is a pulp campaign anywhere. So I am not going to buy anything.

Step #9 is Appearance. For Eris, I’m going with the following: “Eris is a Greecian-looking woman with blonde hair and blue eye usually dressed in a purple toga and sandals.”

Step #10 is the Background, which is the following: “Eris had decided to go to Earth to the usual Earth check and find that she liked how Earth is turning out, so decided to stay on Earth for while to get into and out of trouble.”

Step #11: Time for a Complication. For this one, it’s a Negative Reputation [People assume the human myth of the Golden Apple is true. It’s an Infrequently problem. So that’s +5. So I’m at 515 Character Points.
