Character Creation Business #14: "ICONS" First Edition

In short, “ICONS”, a superhero game that had random rolls for characters have two editions. The first one was published by Adamant Entertainment. The following creation of a character for this edition of “ICONS”

Step #1 for superheroes is to find the origin. To do that you need to roll two size-sided dice or a 2d6 in RPG talk for it. The Dice Number: 7. That makes our PC’s origin: Birthright. As the rulebook says about Birthright: “The hero was born with or destined to develop superhuman

powers. The character gains your choice of one additional power, which should be innate, and not a device, or +2 to a rolled power level.”

Step #2 is to roll for the six Attributes and compare the dice’s number to a table to get the power level number. The table is located on page 11 of the Adamant Entertainment version of the “ICONS” rulebook. The six Attributes are the following: Prowess, Coordination, Strength, Intellect, Awareness, and Willpower. The following is what I got in rolls for each of the six Attributes:

  • Prowess’s Roll: 6 = 4

  • Coordination’s Roll: 5 = 4

  • Strength’s Roll: 8 = 5

  • Intellect’s Roll: 8 = 5

  • Awareness’s Roll: 6 = 4

  • Willpower’s Roll: 7 = 5

Step #3 is to add the numbers up and if do get over the number known as 20, the PC needs to erase and recreated from Step #1 again. 4 + 4 = 8. 5 + 5 = 10. 10 + 8 = 18 + 4 = 22 + 5 = 27. 27 > 20. I’m good. So I plug in the numbers in the PC’s stats.

Step #4 is roll 2d6 and compare it to a table to find how many superpowers the PC. Thought I need to remember I can pick a power since my character’s origin is Birthright. I not counting the Birthright power in the following business. The Dice Number is the following: 9 = 4 powers.

Step #5 is to roll 2d6 and a table to figure out what of the 7 power types the power, then roll a single six-sided dice or 1d6 in RPG twice to find the power in that power types table, and then 2d6 to do the Power Level business again for the Powers. Thought if I get a power that had a bullet [A bullet equal this: • ]next to it is two power choices, so if’s done to one power, I have rolled again.

  • Power #1: Power Type = 2: Alteration; Hero’s Power = 1 & 2: Ability Increase; & Power Level: 9 = 6

  • Power #2: Power Type = 10: Offensive; Hero’s Power = 4 & 1: Aura; & Power Level: 3 = 2

  • Power #3: Power Type = 10: Offensive; Hero’s Power = 1 & 3: Blast; & Power Level: 6 = 4

  • Power #4: Power Type = 3: Alteration; Hero’s Power = 2 & 1: Ability Boost; & Power Level: 7 = 5

Step #6 is to deal with the Birthright’s bonus which is either get a pick a new power or add +2 to roll power. I really don’t like that with 2 in Aura but adding +2 will get 4, which means it’s still weak in my not so humble, so I’m going with Flight as my Birthright power.

Step #7 is to roll up the Birthright’s Power Level. The dice is the number is: 6 = 5

Step #8 is to find the roll the 2d6 and look on the table to find out what is the number of Specialities my PC has. The Dice Number is 8 = 3 Specialities. Time to bring out mythic to help me figure things out. Question #1: Is the first of the PC Specialities the following: Acrobatics? My View: 50/50. Mythic View: 97. Exceptional No. The PC doesn’t have specialties in Acrobatics nor Aerial Combat. Question #2: Art? My View: 50/50. Mythic View: 98. Exceptional No. Art nor Athletics isn’t part of the PC’s specialties. Question #3: Business? My View: 50/50. Mythic View: 82. No. Question #4: Computers? My View: 50/50. Mythic View: 46. Yes. Question #5: Criminology? My View: 50/50. Mythic View: 30. Yes. Question #4; Drive? My View: 50/50. Mythic View: 36. Yes.

Ok. Getting a better view of my PC and I’m going to make her female Cassie Smith a.k.a Cordia.

Step #9 is Stamina. Stamina is the following math problem: Strength + Willpower = Stamina. Let’s plug Cordia’s stats in. 5 + 5 = 10. So Cordia’s stamina is 10.

Step #10 is the Background for Cordia. The background for Cordia is the following: “As a child, Cassie Smith loves any media that had dealt with a superhero - real or fictional. Her parents back it up assuming it was a fad. Despite her love of superhero media, Cordia was a good child and by the time she was 25 years old, she was graduated from college and went to work for the Mango Computer Company. Not long after, she fought a crook to save the Mango’s CEO, Bill Work -- and both would have ended up flatter than an American-style pancake -- if Smith’s magic to spring to life and give her wings. She placed the crook on a watchtower of prison before flying off and landing -- and getting surprised by her parents to take them to her grandparents -- the grandmother told a tale about an ancestor who wings by helping a friendly witch from a ruthless witch hunter of the church. Taking then the name of Cordia, she started to fight crime in the night time, while Cassie Smith still works at the Mango Computer Company.”

Step #11 is to do with the Ability Increase’s Ability. I had to roll a 1d6 to do this one. The Dice Number: 1 = Prowess

Step #12 is to do with Ability Boost’s Ability. I can pick or roll a 1d6 to do this one. I’m going with the letter. The number is the following: 5 = Awareness. That changes that 4 to a 6.

Step #13 is Description, which is just another word for Appearance. For this one, I’m going with the following: “Cordia is a woman with red hair, blue eyes, and white wings usually wearing a white toga and sandals, while Cassie Smith is a woman with red hair and blue eye usually wearing a purple sweater, blue jeans, a pair of white socks, and pair of purple woman loafers.”

Step #14 is dealing with Determination Points. That’s another math problem which is the following: 6 - The number of powers - The number of attributes over 6. Let’s plug in the number for Cordia.  6 - 5  (She had 5 powers) - 0 (she had no attributes over 6) = 1.

Step #15 is Qualities which I can have anywhere between 1 to 5, I think I’m going with the following: “The Real Magic Angel” & “Secret Identity: Cassie Smith, Mango Computer Company worker”

Step #16 is Challenges which I can have anywhere between 1 to 5. For them I’m going with the following: “Jessica Jobber is annoying” & “Warlock has a crush on me.”

And Cordia is done and ready to be played, the full stats are below as usual.
